Full immersion in a culture is always the fastest way to learn a language. TongueTry has been the next best alternative for me, who loves the idea of living in Spain or another Spanish speaking country to learn fluency, but is not able to for the time being. Thankfully, classes are inexpensive, compared to standard language schools, and can be scheduled flexibly online at whatever time slot works for you week to week. I’ve been learning over the years through tutors and traditional classes but have never been able to gain full fluency. The live, face to face experience through Skype and/or Zoom with my teachers, Lourdes and Ninette from Antigua, Guatemala, has been a rich and dynamic one. My typical teaching sessions involve conversation about current events, reading news articles or stories over the course of an hour. They’ve proven invaluable in improving my listening skills, pronunciation, comprehension. Learning figures of speech, colloquialisms, even funny jokes in Spanish make these teaching sessions the next best thing to living in another country. I highly recommend TongueTry for any and all student levels.

I wanted to learn Spanish so that I could better communicate with my significant other from Colombia. I reached out to a former high school instructor looking for recommendations. She recommended tongue try. I looked through their curriculum and compared it to the others and saw that it did not lock you into a rigid path that wasted time and money but created a curriculum that would adjust based on your knowledge and desired outcome. The team allowed one on one instruction which was something that was important to me. After about three months of working with Sam, I feel more comfortable in conversation and more able to keep up and participate in conversations.

I coordinate and lead missions trips from my church to Mexico, and one area that has always been a struggle is learning Spanish. I have been working on learning Spanish since my first trip to Mexico, and I know how difficult it is to try to learn a Spanish on your own. We have tried many different things to help team members learn Spanish, but nothing has worked very well. I came across TongueTry online, and it caught my attention because they had programs tailored for missions trips, and they were willing to tailor a program specifically for us. I was also impressed with their methodology of teaching Spanish, as well as that its also a ministry helping woman in other countries support themselves by teaching Spanish. I took some classes to check the program out further and see if it would be a good fit for our church, and I was super impressed. Sam (my teacher) was awesome, she put me at ease, and is a great teacher. She was good at making the lessons fun, applicable to me, but also pushed me to really help me learn quickly. To evaluate the program I also had her teach me a super basic lesson, and she was great, keeping it immersive, but understandable.
